De Hellenic Open University werd opgericht als een zelfbeheerde staatsuniversiteit met zijn gebouwen voornamelijk in Patras, Griekenland . De universiteit accepteerde de eerste studenten in 1998. Het heeft vier scholen (sociale wetenschappen, toegepaste kunsten, wetenschap en technologie en geesteswetenschappen).

Momenteel zijn meer dan 30.000 studenten en postdoctorale studenten ingeschreven. Ze worden opgeleid door een naar buiten gerichte academische faculteit van ongeveer 50 leden, ondersteund door 2000 adjunct-docenten, hoogleraren, postdoctorale onderzoekers, laboratoriumondersteuners, instructeurs, evenals rond 200 administratief ondersteunend personeel.

De missie van de HELLENIC OPEN UNIVERSITY (HOU) is om universitair onderwijs van hoge kwaliteit te bieden via afstandsonderwijs, zowel op niet-gegradueerd als postdoctoraal niveau. Voor dat doel ontwikkelt en implementeert het geschikt leermateriaal en leermethoden. De bevordering van wetenschappelijk onderzoek, alsmede de ontwikkeling van de relevante technologie en methodologie op het gebied van afstandsonderwijs, vallen binnen de doelstellingen ervan.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the Master’s program, students will be expected to be able to:

analyze, perform and communicate teacher level research related to English language teaching; comprehend and demonstrate specialized language teaching knowledge and skills in the language skills and elements by: Examining, selecting, and using methods conducive to effective learning of particular language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing) and elements (Culture, Grammar, Vocabulary, Pronunciation) and by examining, evaluating, and creating materials to support effective language teaching and learning; critically analyzing research in language acquisition and teaching, and applying it to classroom contexts; design, develop and evaluate curricula and materials for English language teaching; create, analyze and interpret effective measures of language ability of their students; locate and select appropriate teaching resources to use computer technology to assist their learners’ needs; comprehend and apply the principles of English for specific purposes instruction relative to the linguistic background and work environment of their students; demonstrate an understanding of intercultural approaches in language teaching; identify, design and employ recognized principles of effective English language teacher development and training program operation. ... Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Master's Program, students are expected to:

understand and demonstrate specialist knowledge and skills in the teaching of the French language: with particular regard to language teaching, to consider, select and use appropriate methods for effective learning of all language skills (production and comprehension of written and spoken discourse); understand and demonstrate specialist knowledge and skills in the teaching of the French language: with particular regard to the teaching of structures and functions of the French language (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics/vocabulary, and culture), to evaluate, adapt and develop suitable material; design, develop and evaluate programs of studies in accordance with the most important theories in the fields of language, communication, and interaction, and to develop instructional materials for the teaching of the French language; produce, analyze and interpret measurement instruments for the assessment of their learners’ language competence; apply pedagogically appropriate learning scenarios using ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) applications in different learning contexts (e.g., face to face, distance), taking into account specific purposes, needs, and learning environments; understand and apply in practice the principles of teaching French to primary school learners, selecting appropriate «learning tools» that correspond to children’s...
