The research-oriented Master’s programme in Political Science is offered at the Institute for Political Science at Goethe Universität Frankfurt. It follows on from the Bachelor’s programme and teaches the in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of political science.
The Institute for Political Science is one of the largest in Germany and offers a wide range of courses. In the tradition of the internationally renowned Frankfurt Social Sciences department, students on the Master’s programme in Political Science learn how to work independently on the basis of scientific principles and to apply scientific methods and insights as well as to reflect critically on societal connections.
The programme, in particular, allows for an in-depth study of the paradigmatic, theoretical and methodological basis of the subjects as well as key questions of political theory, comparative political science and international relations. A research work placement (project studies) and an obligatory work placement in a professional field of activity allow students to gather experiences that will help them in a future profession and reflect on them systematically.
A successfully completed Master’s degree gives graduates the relevant skills for future professions in different fields of politics, society, economy and culture, all of which require solid academic training and specialisations in politics and social sciences. The study programmes also prepare students for a subsequent PhD programme.
- Admission to the Master’s programme requires a Bachelor’s degree in political science or a comparable degree in a related or comparable study programme.
- Good English language skills (niveau B2) are to be proven by:
o five years of English lessons at school (the grade for English on the final certificate must be “satisfactory” or higher), or
o a level 2 UNIcert degree, or
o a TOEFL test (online score of at least 80) or
o a comparable certificate (niveau B2)
Applicants with an international university entrance qualification and Bachelor's degree must prove sufficient German language skills according to the regulations of the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH), the German language test for university entrance.
If the university entrance qualification for the consecutive Master’s programme (namely the Bachelor’s degree) has not yet been completed, you can apply for the programme with a transcript of records on the basis of at least 80% of the required for the bachelor's degree CP (normally 144 credit points). This provisional certificate must be issued by an officer authorised to award grades or issue certificates. If a student is admitted, this will be on a provisional basis.
Mode of admission
Admission to the programme is restricted.
